Sappers on the Rock

The Royal Engineers contributions to Gibraltar’s defences are manifold and manifest. Since the forming of the Soldier Artificer Company in 1772, this versatile and innovative collection of servicemen has shaped the face of the Rock.

In preparation for invasion during WWII the RE Tunnelling companies formed a labyrinth of underground passageways, roads, magazines, accommodation areas and much more to ensure the garrison was able to function through siege conditions.
